The town of Tambobong, now Malabon was originally founded as a "Visita"
of Tondo by the Augustinian Friars on May 21, 1599. It remained under the
administrative jurisdiction of the province of Tondo together with Malate,
Paranaque, Pasig, and Taguig from the years 1627-1688.
In 1827, residents of Barrios San Jose, Navotas and Bangkulasi petitioned
to the Spanish authorities for the creation of a new town, separate and distinct
from Tambobong. This petition was accordingly granted in 1859.
Following the cessation of hostilities, the Philippine Commission on June
11, 1901, enacted the Philippine Commission Act 137, officially making Malabon
a municipality of the newly created Province of Rizal. Consistent with the
Economic Centralization Policy, Philippine Commission Act 942 was promulgated,
combining Malabon and Navotas under a new government. On January 6, 1906,
Philippine Commission Act 1442, separated Malabon from Navotas into distinct
municipalities of Rizal Province.
For seventy years, Malabon was a municipality of Rizal until on November 7,
1975 when Presidential Decree 824, made it a part of Metropolitan Manila or
the National Capital Region.
